YERINGTON, Nev. (AP) — Several hundred people paid their respects at a funeral mass for Joe Dini in Yerington where the former longtime Nevada Assembly speaker was described as a quiet, humble man who became a "legislative giant" during three decades in the legislature. Dozens of past and present state legislators, elected and other government officials crowded into the rural high school gymnasium for today's service for the state's longest-serving assemblyman. He died April 10 at the age of 85.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — North Las Vegas administrators are finishing a tentative budget to submit to the Nevada Department of Taxation in a bid to avoid a state takeover of city finances and services. City spokesman Mitch Fox said today that city officials were finalizing a spending plan after reaching tentative agreements last week with key employee unions to overcome a projected budget deficit of nearly $18 million. Taxation officials say that under state law, cities need to have their proposed balanced budgets postmarked today.

RENO, Nev. (AP) — Transportation officials in Reno have unveiled a new fleet of buses that run solely on electric batteries. Officials for the Regional Transit Commission say the four new buses are quieter, cleaner and cheaper than their gasoline-powered counterparts. They expect to save up to $500,000 over the life of the vehicles. The Reno Gazette-Journal reports the buses emit zero emissions. They can be fully charged within 10 minutes at a special charging station at the downtown transit center.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Las Vegas police are investigating a fatal shooting at an intersection south of the Strip and west of the Henderson Airport. Police say nearby residents reported a man running in a desert area before collapsing shortly before 7:30 p.m. yesterday at the intersection of East Neal Avenue and La Cienega Street. Lt. Ray Steiber says the man died from multiple gunshot wounds. He tells KLAS-TV officers are canvassing the neighborhood in the area near St. Rose Parkway and Bermuda Road.
