UNDATED (AP) — US swimmer Michael Phelps is coming out of retirement and will take part in an event in Mesa, Ariz., on April 24-26, with an eye on possibly competing in the 2016 Olympics in Rio. The last time the 22-time Olympic medal-winner competed was at the 2012 Games.
AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (AP) — Joe Dumars has stepped down as president of basketball operations for the Detroit Pistons. The Pistons are going to miss out on their fifth straight post season with a record of 29-52 with just one game remaining.
UNDATED (AP) — Michigan State shooting guard Gary Harris is leaving school two years early to enter the NBA draft. Harris averaged a team-high 16.7 points last season to help the Spartans win 29 games, including the Big Ten tournament championship. Michigan State coach Tom Izzo (IH'-zoh) told reporters after the season that he would advise Harris to make the jump to the league if his research led him to believe Harris would be among the top guards drafted in June.
CINCINNATI (AP) — Pittsburgh and Cincinnati combined to hit 10 home runs before their game was suspended by rain with the score tied 7-7 through six innings. Neil Walker and Gaby Sanchez hit back-to-back homers twice for the Pirates, who will pick up the game late this afternoon in Cincinnati. Devin Mesoraco's solo shot off Bryan Morris tied it at 7 in the bottom of the sixth and made it the first 10-homer game in the majors since the Tigers and Cubs combined for 11 in 2006.
UNDATED (AP) — The Nashville Predators have fired original head coach Barry Trotz after 15 seasons and a 557-479-160 record. Trotz was offered a position in the team's hockey operations department after becoming NHL's longest tenured head coach with one team, coaching 1,196 games with Nashville. That put him second only to Greg Popovich of the NBA's San Antonio Spurs for longest active coaching tenure in the four major sports.
