MISANO ADRIATICO, Italy (AP) — The Italian motorcycling federation says rider Emanuele Cassani has died after being involved in a crash at the Coppa Italia season-opener.

Cassani skidded and was hit by two other riders shortly after the start of his race on Sunday.

The FMI says the 25-year-old Cassani received immediate medical attention but died because of the injuries he sustained.

One of the other riders involved was flown to a hospital but his injuries are not serious.

The incident happened at the Misano circuit named after MotoGP rider Marco Simoncelli, who died after a crash at the 2011 Malaysian Grand Prix.
