CINCINNATI (AP) — Reds starter Mat Latos was diagnosed with a strained right forearm on Sunday and won't be allowed to throw for 10-14 days.

Cincinnati's No. 2 starter has been trying to come back from surgery to repair torn cartilage in his left knee on Feb. 14. He was getting close and made one rehab start in the minors. A second start was cancelled because of a sore elbow.

Latos threw in the bullpen on Friday and felt soreness in his forearm, a new problem. He went for an MRI on Saturday.

"It's more time off to let it recover, let is simmer down, get the inflammation out of there and then start back up," manager Bryan Price said. "He'll keep working hard on staying in shape and doing all the other things he's capable of doing.

"But yeah, it's a setback. His timetable will definitely be pushed back fairly significantly."

Latos was one of eight Reds who opened the season on the disabled list, the most in the majors. The Reds originally hoped to have him back by the end of April. The knee and forearm problems have left them unsure of what to expect.

"We're very optimistic that he'll be back throwing in the next 10-14 days and at that time, he should hopefully not have any more issues," Price said. "But time will tell."
