PERTH, Australia (AP) — Austrialian Prime Minister Tony Abbott is backing away somewhat from his statement saying he was very confident that the missing Malaysian jetliner could be found. Speaking in Beijing Saturday on the last day of his visit to China, Abbott said, in his words, "No one should underestimate the difficulties of the task still ahead of us." Most of the 239 passengers aboard Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 were Chinese.
CAIRO (AP) — A court in Egypt has sentenced an ultraconservative Islamist who is an ally of ousted President Mohammed Morsi to one year in prison for insulting the judiciary during his trial. Saturday's verdict is the second one-year sentence Hazem Salah Abu-Ismail has received on similar charges. Judge Mohammed Sherine Fahmy gave him one in January for contempt of the court.
MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) — A Republican senator attending a conference of conservatives in her home state is applauding the resignation of embattled Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, asking "what took so long." Sen. Kelly Ayotte made the comment today as conservatives gathered in Manchester prepared to hear from a host of prospective Republican Party presidential prospects for 2016. Among the guest speakers are Senators Rand Paul of Kentucky and Ted Cruz of Texas.
KUWAIT CITY (AP) — A Kuwaiti opposition group led by a former lawmaker convicted of making comments considered insulting to the ruling emir says it plans to launch a series of street protests to press for reform in the Gulf state. Former lawmaker Musallam al-Barrack announced the plans at a gathering Saturday. He says his reform agenda includes allowing people to run for the position of prime minister. Currently, prime ministers are appointed by the emir and are from the ruling family.
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama says women earning less than men in the same profession and with the same education is an embarrassment. He used his weekly media message to reinforce his position that equal pay is a must in this country and is a leading election-year issue for Democrats eager to mobilize women to vote. For the Republicans, Congresswoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers of Washington says the economy under Obama is hurting women.
