WASHINGTON (AP) — Alex Ovechkin's Washington Capitals have been officially eliminated from playoff contention, the first time they'll sit out the postseason since 2007.
The Capitals were off Wednesday night, when the Columbus Blue Jackets and Detroit Red Wings clinched the last two berths in the Eastern Conference.
Washington is six points behind both of those clubs with three games left to play, but it would lose all tiebreakers.
Ovechkin, a three-time league MVP, leads the NHL with 50 goals this season.
