WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama says Afghanistan's presidential election marks another important milestone. He says the Afghan people are taking full responsibility for their country as the U.S. and its allies gradually withdraw their troops. Millions of Afghans went to the polls on Saturday despite threats from the Taliban. Partial results are expected Sunday.
PERTH, Australia (AP) — The international search for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 is resuming in the southern Indian Ocean. The Boeing 777 and the 239 people aboard have been missing for nearly a month. No trace of the plane has been found. But there could be a new clue. A Chinese ship says it's heard electronic pulse signals consistent with those of an aircraft's "black box."
TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — It's likely that it'll soon be legal to openly carry firearms across Kansas. The Legislature has given final approval to a bill nullifying city and county gun restrictions. The measure now goes to Gov. Sam Brownback. The Republican is a strong supporter of gun rights. Under the bill, localities could still prevent people from openly carrying guns in public buildings.

As a result, U.S. Steel has temporarily halted steelmaking at its massive Gary Works complex in northwestern Indiana. The Times of Munster reports that treacherous ice covering much of Lake Superior is preventing ships from hauling ore from Minnesota's Iron Range to Indiana.
RENO, Nev. (AP) — Tensions are growing in a turf battle that's been simmering for decades over one of the icons of the American West and scant forage on arid, high desert lands from Nevada to Wyoming. Wild-horse advocates say the U.S. government is rounding up too many mustangs while allowing livestock to overgraze. But ranchers say not enough horses are being gathered.
