OREM — Police raided a massage parlor Monday that detectives said was offering sex acts in addition to the spa treatment.
Annong Zhao, 55 and Hong Zhang, 46, were arrested and booked into the Utah County Jail for unlawful conduct in a massage practice and unlawful conduct with a massage practice, Orem Police Lt. Craig Martinez said.
Martinez said an undercover operation revealed that the women were offering the sex acts and they were advertising.
“It wasn’t obvious, probably in the Yellow Pages,” Martinez said. “But they were advertising, and a lot of times they use different online Internet sites to do that advertising.”
Martinez said it was unclear if the women were in the U.S. legally, and it appeared they were living inside the business, Spring SPA, located at 386 East 720 South in Orem.
Neighbors said the parlor has been in operation at least four to five months, and in that time, men arrived at the business at all hours — even late at night.
A business card from the store showed it was open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., seven days per week.
Martinez said these types of businesses are rare, but they do exist.
“We know they’re out there and we’re always looking for them,” Martinez said. “It just happened this time we stumbled upon one.”
Annie Bradley, a worker at a neighboring business, said she had suspected something was wrong for a long time.
“They’re kind of scantily dressed,” she said. “And usually we just see men going in there.”
Police said appointments were only arranged in advance, and the windows were tinted and the front door was always locked.
A client would have to ring a door bell to get somebody to answer, Martinez said.
Martinez said it is believed that the women were operating the business by themselves.
