CAPITOL-MARIJUANA
WASHINGTON (AP) — Visitors to the U.S. Capitol might be high on politics -- but that's all. Capitol Police report busting a man they say tried bringing pot into the Senate Gallery. Authorities say 32-year-old Sherman Edwards Junior of Chicago was busted after a routine search. Visitors to the Senate have to go through metal detectors and empty their pockets. Officers say they found a "green leafy substance" that later tested positive for marijuana. Edwards has been charged with possession of both marijuana and drug paraphernalia.
HASH OIL EXPLOSION
DENVER (AP) — Getting blasted. Then, getting busted. Prosecutors in Denver are charging three men with arson following an explosion at a duplex house. Authorities say the men were using butane in making hash oil. The home was badly damaged and one of the men suffered minor injuries. Investigators who searched the home say they found stuff used for hash oil, a high potency extract of marijuana.
COLLEGE-MILEY CYRUS COURSE
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (AP) — There could be some home "twerk" involved in a new college course on Miley Cyrus. Skidmore College in upstate New York is offering a summer class on the 21-year-old pop star. The Saratogian newspaper reports the class is titled: "The Sociology of Miley Cyrus: Race, Class, Gender and Media." Visiting prof Carolyn Chernoff says she got the idea after using a video of Cyrus twerking in another class. But Chernoff says there won't be any required twerking in her course. She says students will have learn to twerk on their own time.
TACO BELL-RONALD MCDONALD
NEW YORK (AP) — Ronald McDonald is making a commercial for Taco Bell. And not just one Ronald McDonald. A couple of dozen guys whose real name is Ronald McDonald are appearing in TV spots for the taco chain. The commercials feature Taco Bell's new breakfast menu, including the waffle taco. Just so there's no confusion, there's a print line at the end of the spot that reads: "These Ronald McDonalds are not affiliated with McDonald's Corporation."
MILWAUKEE ZOO-BABY GORILLA
MILWAUKEE (AP) — There's a new baby at the Milwaukee County Zoo. A baby gorilla was born at the zoo a week ago Wednesday. Zoo officials think they have a baby girl, but haven't gotten close enough to make sure. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports both the mother and baby are doing well. The little girl or guy joins three adult female and three adult male gorillas at the zoo.
NEW CANDY PLANT
TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Mmm. M-and-M's. Millions and millions of M-and-M's. Mars is opening its first new candy factory in 35 years. The grand opening of the $270 million plant was yesterday in Topeka, Kansas. It will be able to churn out 39 million M-and-M's a day. That's enough to fill a million and a-half fun-sized packs. The plant will also be able to produce 14 million bite-sized Snickers a day. The new candy plant will operate 24 hours a day, five days a week.
