SALT LAKE CITY — A former assistant Cottonwood High School football coach who pleaded guilty to assaulting a man at a party has been sentenced to probation.
Eric Christian Eyre, 32, who pleaded guilty to third-degree felony aggravated assault resulting in serious bodily injury, was sentenced to zero to five years in prison by 3rd District Judge Elizabeth Hruby-Mills Monday. However, the judge suspended the prison time and ordered Eyre to serve three years' probation. He was also ordered to pay $11,112 in restitution to the victim in the case.
According to charges, Eyre was attending a party at 2015 S. 500 East in Salt Lake City on March 24, 2012 when his friend began to argue with another man about spilled alcohol. Eyre and his friend were asked to leave the party.
Eyre then punched the man who was arguing with his friend, and he repeatedly hit the man's head against the ground, knocking him unconscious, charging documents state.
According to police, the victim was treated at University Hospital for a concussion, received stitches to his forehead and chin and suffered three chipped teeth.
Eyre resigned from his post at the school after charges were filed.
