SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Box Elder County has certified a referendum petition to let voters decide whether the county should sell its landfill to a regional garbage authority comprised of five northern Utah county governments.
Clerk LuAnn Adams says 4,066 voters signed the petition, more than 2,331 needed to put the issue on the ballot in November.
Three petitions circulated after the county commission voted to sell the Little Mountain landfill over citizen objections to the Northern Utah Regional Landfill Authority, a consortium of governments from Weber, Morgan, Davis, Cache counties and Wasatch Integrated Waste Management.
County Attorney Stephen Hadfield tossed two of the petitions, saying they addressed administrative issues not suited to a referendum.
