PHOENIX (AP) — An Arizona House committee has approved a Senate bill that would give a big property tax break to a private, for-profit Christian university in west Phoenix.
The House Committee on Ways and Means unanimously approved the Senate-passed bill vote on Monday.
Senate Bill 1301 cuts the taxes Grand Canyon University must pay every year by reclassifying it into a much lower rate. If the bill was passed and signed into law it would reduce the university's taxes from about $1 million annually to about $264,000.
Bill sponsor Sen. Steve Yarbrough of Chandler has said the bill evens the playing field for GCU and is a good public policy decisions. The Senate approved the bill on Feb. 20 with a 27-2 vote.
