SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Utah measure to ensure that small towns remember to hold elections is moving forward in the state Legislature.
The House voted unanimously Monday to approve the bill from Ephraim Republican Rep. Jon Cox.
Cox brings the measure after the mountain community of Wallsburg missed its November election.
Officials for the town of 275 people said forgetfulness, not foul play, was to blame.
Cox says the bill is necessary because under current Utah protocol, the missed contests keep officials in place until the next planned election two years down the road.
Under the measure, either a county office or the lieutenant governor would schedule make-up elections. But the town would still be on the hook for related costs.
The bill advances to the Senate.
