BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Jose Rodriguez scored 18 points Saturday night and Lawrence Johnson-Danner added 13 as Texas Southern downed Southern University 67-64.
Texas Southern (16-14, 12-6 Southwestern Athletic Conference) opened with a 9-0 run capped by a 3-pointer by Johnson-Danner. Southern used a 9-2 run to close to 20-19, but the Tigers pulled ahead with two more 3s by Johnson-Danner and led 35-27 at halftime.
The Jaguars (19-12, 15-3) used an 8-2 second half run to close to 39-35, then pulled ahead 57-54 on a 3 by Tre Lynch. Yondarius Johnson scored five straight points and Southern led 62-61 at 2:47, but Texas Southern rallied for a 65-62 lead on free throws by Johnson-Danner. Calvin Godfrey missed a game-tying free throw for Southern and Johnson-Danner iced the win with two free throws of his own.
Johnson led Southern with 12, Javan Mitchell had 10, and Calvin Godfrey and Malcom Miller scored 10 each.
