ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) — California Chrome romped to victory by 7¼ lengths in the $300,000 San Felipe Stakes for 3-year-olds at Santa Anita, inserting the colt into the Kentucky Derby picture.
Ridden by Victor Espinoza, California Chrome ran 1 1/16 miles in 1:40.59 on Saturday and paid $4.80, $2.60 and $2.10 as the 7-5 favorite. He's trained by Art Sherman, who's been in the business for more than 50 years.
Trained by three-time Kentucky Derby winner Bob Baffert, Midnight Hawk returned $3 and $2.20. Baffert's other horse, Bayern, was scratched because of a bruised front foot. Bayern was the morning line favorite after winning both of his starts easily.
Kristo was third and paid $2.60 to show. Schoolofhardrocks was fourth.
Also scratched were Home Run Kitten and Rprettyboyfloyd, leaving a seven-horse field for the Grade 2 race.
