KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — The sudden disappearance of a Malaysia Airlines jetliner in flight has investigators wondering what could have gone wrong. No distress call was made before the Boeing 777 with 239 people aboard disappeared from radar while flying from Malaysia to Beijing. Aviation experts say it appears there was either a sudden breakup of the plane or something that led it into a quick, steep dive.
KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — The U.S. Navy is joining the multinational search for a Malaysian airliner that vanished en route from Malaysia to Beijing. The guided missile destroyer USS Pinckney is on its way from international waters in the South China Sea to the southern coast of Vietnam, where oil slicks have been spotted by search planes. The Navy is also sending a patrol and surveillance plane based in Okinawa.
KEY LARGO, Fla. (AP) — The White House says the world leaders President Barack Obama spoke with today agree that Russia must pull its military forces back to their bases in Ukraine's Crimean peninsula and allow access for international observers and human rights monitors. They're also pushing for direct talks between Russia and Ukraine. Obama spoke by phone today with the leaders of England, France, Italy and three Baltic states.
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina utility officials now say about 275,000 homes and businesses still don't have power after a storm dumped snow, sleet and ice on the Piedmont region. Duke Energy says 225,000 of its customers are without power this afternoon. Temperatures dropped below freezing this morning, but forecasters say highs in the 60s this weekend should thaw things out.
UNDATED (AP) — One sign of spring arrives early tomorrow. Daylight saving time begins at 2 a.m., local time, in most of the country. That means setting clocks ahead an hour and losing an hour of sleep -- but gaining an hour of daylight in the evening. Daylight saving time ends Nov. 2.
