JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals and third baseman Matt Carpenter have worked out a new $52 million, six-year deal. The deal includes a team option for a seventh year in 2020 at $18.5 million. Should St. Louis decline the option, they would pay Carpenter a $2 million buyout. Carpenter hit .318 while leading the National League in hits, doubles and runs last season.

UNDATED (AP) — Two of the top teams in the NHL's Central Division are squaring off this afternoon. The game in Denver has Colorado facing St. Louis. The Blues lead the division by two points over Chicago and three over the Avalanche. The Blues have won the first two games between the teams this season.

UNDATED (AP) — Two of the hottest teams in the NBA are in action tonight. The Clippers, who have won six straight and eight of 10, are home to the Hawks, while the Spurs, who have won five straight and eight of 10, are home to Orlando.

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) — There is a classic ACC matchup tonight in Durham, N.C. as fourth-ranked Duke plays host to No. 14 North Carolina. They met last month in Chapel Hill with the Tar Heels coming out on top 74-66.

UNDATED (AP) —A pair of U.S. Olympic gold medal winners won alpine races today. Mikaela (mih-KAY'-luh) Shiffrin won a World Cup slalom race following her victory in Russia, while Ted Ligety (LIHG'-eh-tee) also finished first in a men's giant slalom race.
