SOPOT, Poland (AP) — Double defending champion Veronica Campbell-Brown made a rusty return to running on Saturday, struggling to qualify for the 60 meter semifinals at the world indoor championships.
Cleared to run only last month by sport's highest court following a doping scandal, the Jamaican looked sluggish in her heat and finished only third, the last guaranteed spot to advance.
Campbell-Brown said that "when you don't compete for a while, you got to feel a little rusty." Murielle Ahoure from Ivory Coast and fellow-Jamaican Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce were fastest in the heats.
Meanwhile, heptathlete Ashton Eaton moved within world record pace with a strong 60 hurdles, and with only the pole vault and closing 1,000 to come later Saturday. The defending champion set the record at the world indoors two years ago.
