ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — Albuquerque public schools are likely to see 80 new teachers next year.

The Albuquerque Journal reports (http://bit.ly/1fGPibG) that Albuquerque Public Schools announced plans Wednesday to add several teachers for the first time in several years.

APS spokeswoman Johanna King says the new hires are projected to cost between $4 and $4.5 million.

King says the number of positions could possibly change in the coming months as the school district plans its 2014-15 budget.

The district currently employs 6,328 teachers.

State lawmakers last month approved legislation calling for school districts to return to statutory class size limits over the next three years.

King says APS would need to hire 120 teachers, which would cost $7 million, to meet the requirement.
