NEW YORK (AP) — Another 28 people have been indicted in a New York disability fraud case that's already accused more than 100 retired firefighters, police officers and others of scamming the Social Security disability system. The new indictments include sons of some of the alleged ringleaders. They're accused of faking psychiatric problems to get Social Security disability benefits. Prosecutors say many recipients were advised to invoke 9/11.
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The district attorney in Monterey County, California, says it appears some police officers in the Central California town of King City "have dishonored their badge." Four officers, including the chief who just retired, are accused of taking part in a scheme in which cars belonging to poor Hispanic people were impounded and towed. They were later sold or given away for free to police officers when the car owner's couldn't pay the fees. King City's acting chief is also facing charges.
BONNE TERRE, Mo. (AP) — Missouri has carried out its fourth execution in as many months. Forty-seven-year-old Michael Taylor was put to death by lethal injection just after midnight local time for abducting, raping and killing a 15-year-old girl in 1989. A man who carried out the crime with Taylor also has been sentenced to death.
TORONTO (AP) — A Canadian doctor who sexually assaulted 21 sedated women during surgeries has been sentenced to 10 years in prison. The judge on Tuesday said 65-year-old anesthesiologist George Doodnaught exploited the extraordinarily high degree of trust the patients placed in him and his conduct "did enormous damage and was reprehensible in the extreme." Many of Doodnaught's victims were in court Ontario Superior Court for the sentencing.
SAN DIEGO (AP) — A family in San Diego is suing Petco after their 10-year-old son died from a bacterial infection they say he contracted from a pet rat bite. Aidan Pankey died in June 2013, hours after he was rushed to the hospital with severe stomach pains. Petco says it's in the process of investigating the claim.
