This is Chris Redgrave for Zions Bank Speaking on Business.
Here's an interesting fact — 75 percent of everything you see in the grocery store produce section requires pollination. That speaks of the importance of honeybees and why everyone should be concerned about declining honeybee populations. Thomas Hopkins was worried too and that's one reason he created his American Fork-based company, Beehive State.
As a hobbyist beekeeper, Thomas was running around 40 hives. He noticed the high level of maintenance beehives required and started thinking how he could improve the process. He discovered a military-grade plastic spray that would protect beehives.
That's when Thomas created the Mellivo Strong Box. It's a box covered with the military-grade plastic spray that is non-toxic and FDA food grade, so the exterior is maintenance free and very durable. It's also designed to be a better permanent home for the bees to make their hive and for the beekeeper to collect the honey.
Beehive State offers three different sizes of Mellivo Strong Box Hives capable of holding populations of 40,000 to 80,000 bees, which can rapidly produce honey during nectar flow. A deep box can hold 80 to 100 pounds of honey, and medium boxes 40 to 50 pounds. In addition to the boxes, Beehive State sells apiary equipment and beekeeping supplies to all sizes and styles of beekeepers, from large commercial beekeepers to hobbyists. And they love this line of products, especially the Mellivo Strong Box!
Thomas says a major trend happening right now is rooftop beekeeping, especially in big cities where rooftops and balconies have become great homes for hive placement. Many people are choosing to get small hives or colonies, so you can imagine why a product like the Mellivo Strong Box would be important and why apiary supplies are more in demand...
Thomas says beekeeping is a delicate art and requires understanding of what the bees need to keep them healthy.... That's why he's dedicated to protecting and furthering this art through Beehive State. He offers free classes through IFA periodically, and he operates "The Art of Beekeeping in Utah" page on Facebook.
