LOS ANGELES, May 31, 2006 (UPI via COMTEX) -- A Los Angeles jury has awarded a frustrated Pennsylvania widow $2.1 million in damages from a matchmaker who couldn't find her a suitable rich man.
Anne Majerik, 60, a social worker who lives in Erie, Pa., has paid $125,000 since December 2002 to Beverly Hills matchmaker Orly Hadida. She claimed in her lawsuit she got nothing like she was promised.
Instead of "a cultured gentleman" with an "estate of up to $20 million," she gave an example of how an international banker turned out to be "an interpreter that worked in a bank," the Los Angeles Times reported Wednesday.
Afterwards, several jurors said it was a difficult decision, as they had little sympathy for either woman. They told the Times they wanted to award $20 million with the stipulation it went to charity, but the judge wouldn't allow it.
"They were both wrong," said foreman Christie Troutt.
