SALT LAKE CITY – A man and woman were injured Monday after a fight over cocaine broke out at a homeless shelter, Salt Lake City police said.

Around 4 p.m., a man at the Road Home shelter, located at 210 S. Rio Grande Street, allegedly stole some crack cocaine from a woman before he walked away. The woman became upset over the theft, pulling out her “trusty knife,” police said. She chased him into the middle of the street, where she stabbed him, according to police.

The woman was knocked down during the attack, and the man began kicking her, police said.

Police were called by someone at a nearby business. Neither cooperated with officers, and the man assaulted both medical personnel and an officer, police said. He was sprayed with pepper spray to control him.

The man was taken to University Hospital for treatment of an 8-inch long and 2-inch deep cut, police reported. He is expected to be taken into custody on suspicion of robbery, assault on an EMS personnel and resisting arrest.

The woman was arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault.
