This is Chris Redgrave for Zions Bank Speaking on Business.
After all holiday treats, doesn't a good homemade hamburger and hand cut Idaho French fries sound good? If this is tempting, we've got 13 Five Guys Burgers and Fries right here in Utah to choose from with three more opening this year.
In talking to franchise owner Steve Hawes, he says this company has a complete focus on quality and freshness. They believe in buying local as much as possible and helped create an arrangement to buy buns from a local bakery. They also buy potatoes from local growers. Every time you go in, a sign by the register says the name of the farm where that day's potatoes came from, which is often Idaho.
Steve says there is an art to French fries. They hand cut the fries every day. At Five Guys, they won't let the fries sit around so they're fresh!! Each store goes through anywhere from 500 to 750 pounds of potatoes per day. Not to mention, the fries are cooked in peanut oil, which is the healthiest oil to use and has no trans fats.
When you're in the burger business, you have to differentiate. Think about it: the hamburger is one of the leading fast food items in the United States. So, as a hamburger selling operation, it's critical to find ways to distinguish yourself and create a destination concept. Steve says Five Guys was one of the first to create a better burger restaurant, and the concept has invited competition. They're still known for their fresh burgers with all the toppings available for free.
Steve says he has the perfect business partner in Daryl Neider (nye-der). See, he is the idea guy while Daryl figures out a way to make it happen. That's why they're now up to 30 Five Guys locations throughout Utah, Idaho and two other states with more to come. Not to mention, they're both locals, since they grew up in Idaho and now live in Utah.
Steve and Daryl have every intention to continue their commitment to the quality burger and French fry concept that Five Guys Burgers and Fries already has.
