Keith McCord ReportingThis first long weekend of the summer season began not at all like we had hoped! The rain started at mid-day, and it's been coming down periodically ever since. At times it was raining quite hard, making driving a bit hazardous.
The weather is also to blame for several power outages. In Sugarhouse, traffic lights were out and a few businesses temporarily shut their doors. As many as 2,000 people were without electricity. In Summit County, more than 600 people were without power in the Kamas area this afternoon.
So, what did YOU have planned for the weekend? A round of golf? A family outing to go boating or fishing? How about the first camping trip?
Ranger, Jordanelle State Park: "People are pretty hardy. We kind of expected people to leave and go home, but people are sticking it out hoping the weather will break."
At Jordanelle State Park it was a grey day and at times a bit wet. Certainly not the best day to get out and water ski, or try to fish. Winds made the water choppy. Some who brought their boats didn't even bother to take them off the trailer, at least for now.
A few, though, gave up and headed home.
For one group from West Valley, getting away for Memorial Day weekend is a tradition, and sitting around the campfire was more about trying to keep warm, rather than roasting marshmallows and telling stories.
Charline Webster: "We're gonna stick it out and ride the storm and have fun."
Golfing tended to be challenging and/or miserable. Depending upon where you were, rainsuits and umbrellas were necessary. Many courses had cancellations and handed out rainchecks. Chris Miller was really looking forward to playing today with a big group of friends.
Chris Miller: "We decided to have a bachelor party because I'm getting married next weekend. And we just wanted the last hurrah with just the guys, but the rain is kinda stepping in the way right now."
He's hoping next weekend has good weather for his wedding.
