LOS ANGELES (AP) — Evan Payne scored a career-high 27 points and Loyola Marymount upset BYU 87-76 in a West Coast Conference opener on Saturday.

BYU (8-6), picked by WCC coaches to finish second, never led after LMU scored 13 unanswered points to take a 17-5 lead with 13:53 left in the first half. The Lions (9-4) maintained a double-digit lead thereafter.

The Lions' largest lead was 21 with 14:05 remaining in the game, coming via a 9-0 run on two 3-pointers by Payne and another by Anthony Ireland.

Payne made a career-high 5 of 9 3-point attempts with the Lions hitting 8 of 17 for 47.1 percent. Ireland added 14 points, Gabe Levin 12 and C.J. Blackwell 11.

BYU's Kyle Collinsworth scored 18 points with Eric Mika adding 17 and Matt Carlino 13. Tyler Haws, averaging 23.2 points per game this season, made only 4 of 15 shots for 11 points.
