SALT LAKE CITY — Airline travelers who feel they've been unfairly screened can now report their complaints directly to congress members through an app for iPhones and Androids called FlyRights.
This week a civil rights group, the Sikh Coalition, released an upgraded version of their app that was launched a year ago. The new version allows complaints to bypass TSA and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
A representative with the group reports in 2012 they received 157 complaints, but says the TSA and Homeland Security only reported a handful of them.
"In 2012, the Department of Homeland Security claims they only received 8 complaints from all over the country," says Raj Singh, Policy Director of the Sikh Coalition.
In response the TSA released this statement: "TSA has zero tolerance for racial profiling and employs multiple checks and balances to ensure unlawful profiling does not occur."
The TSA says in the fiscal year 2013, 368 claims were investigated, 142 of them came from the FlyRights app.
The app also has a map that shows the number of complaints filed through FlyRights at each airport. Four have been filed against the Salt Lake City International Airport.
