(KSL News) -- Mexico's President Fox met privately with leaders from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints today.
It was a courtesy visit, but last night CNN's Lou Dobbs suggested the Fox visit is a proselyting tool for the Church.
Lou Dobbs, Courtesy CNN: "I was just struck by the idea of The Church of Latter-day Saints, the Mormon Church, seems to be looking south just as avidly and aggressively as the Catholic Church to add a few folks to those pews."
Lou Dobbs, Courtesy CNN: "The Mormon church has about 1 million Mexican converts, has built 12 churches in Mexico, and has a vigorous enthusiasm for as many of Mexico's citizens as they possibly could attract to the state of Utah, irrespective of the cost to taxpayers."
Governor Huntsman's office responded, calling the comments a "blatant mischaracterization of fact" and said they're disappointed in his unfounded diatribe.
The LDS Church also responded, saying, in part, "Such statements are completely without foundation. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has over a million members in Mexico. It does not encourage them to move to Utah or anywhere else."
The Church also pointed out that it has 12 Temples in Mexico and nearly one thousand churches there.
