SALT LAKE COUNTY — The driver of a stolen car led police on a high-speed chase and was almost hit by a TRAX train before officers arrested him.

Shortly before midnight a tax commission officer noticed a man at a 7-Eleven in Salt Lake County and thought the man planned to rob the store. The officer ran the license plate of the man's car and discovered it was stolen.

When he tried to pull over the driver, the car sped away. Police said they clocked the car racing down 1000 North at speeds up to 80 miles per hour.

The chase continued onto I-15, then onto 3300 South through oncoming traffic. Police called off the chase after the car bolted around downed arms at a TRAX crossing and barely missed getting hit by the oncoming train.

A short time later police spotted the stolen car on 900 East, still speeding. Officers set up traps and cornered the car. It crashed through a fence near 4200 South and 900 East.

The driver jumped out of the car and led police on a foot pursuit before officers finally caught him.

They arrested Antonio Andino.

The owner of the stolen car said he reported it missing around 2:30 p.m. Thursday.
