WEST VALLEY CITY — A battle of technology wits took place on Friday at Hunter High School as students competed for the title of "Fastest Geek."
The competition at the school's annual "Geek Fest" was fierce as students worked to build a computer as fast as they could. The computer both had to boot up and have a working CD ROM.
"Last year's Fastest Geek is going down," one competitor said.
"It's about developing skills that they can use in the world, and computer skills are more important every year," a supervising teacher said.
"I actually built computers for a couple of summers, so it's a chance to show that I learned something and show off my skills," another competitor said.
The two students who finished first were given two "loaded" tablet computers, second and third places won an iPod and all students who participated got to keep the computers they tried to build, which will be equipped with the new Windows 8.1 operating system.
"It was a friendly competition, and it was fun to barely beat (the next closest contestant)," one winner said.
