CEDAR CITY — A bizarre standoff that occurred in the middle of a Cedar City street ended after more than two hours Wednesday night when a 26-year-old man was taken into custody by Iron County sheriff's deputies.
The incident began around 5:35 p.m. when deputies were dispatched to 1300 N. Iron Springs Road to a report of a male lying in the road. A witness said the man was holding something to his throat and acting irrationally, according to the Cedar City Sheriff's Office.
When deputies arrived on the scene, they located the subject and shut down Iron Springs Road and adjacent streets, containing the area. The man was found to have a knife, and he advanced on deputies, threatening them. Deputies began trying to deescalate the situation.
A negotiator was on scene and talked with the subject for over two hours. After two hours of communication with the subject, he became more irrational and stopped talking with the negotiator.

"The Iron County Sheriff's SWAT team and other neighboring agencies were deployed to the area along with K-9 teams," the sheriff's office said in a prepared statement. "A negotiator was on scene and talked with the subject for over two hours. After two hours of communication with the subject, he became more irrational and stopped talking with the negotiator."
At that point, K-9s and "other less lethal options" were used to apprehend the man, according the sheriff's office. The subject was taken into custody and transported to Valley View Medical Center for treatment.
"It was discovered after the incident, a home in the area had been damaged by this subject," the sheriff's office said. "A criminal investigation is still active, and charges are pending."
