SEATTLE (AP) - Amazon is offering an enticement to independent bookstores: sell the Kindle and get a 10 percent cut of the price of the digital books that people buy for it, for two years.
Amazon.com Inc. said Wednesday that the program, called "Amazon Source," will also give booksellers a discount when they purchase Kindles for resale. Retailers that don't classify themselves as booksellers get a larger discount on the Kindles but not the 10 percent cut of the books sold on the devices.
Booksellers get a 6 percent off Kindle devices for resale, while general retailers get 9 percent off.
Amazon got its start selling books over the Internet and is now the world's largest online retailer. It competes with brick-and-mortar bookstores by selling books at a discount.
