WOODS CROSS — A passenger was killed after an intoxicated driver struck the back of a parked tow truck Thursday, according to the Woods Cross Police Department.

David Helm, 47, was booked into Davis County Jail on charges of automobile homicide in connection with a fatal traffic accident at 1500 S. 1400 West, according to Det. Adam Osoro of the Woods Cross Police Department.

‘When they arrived on scene they found two occupants of the vehicle, one of which had sustained fairly serious injury," he said. "At that time medical personnel were dispatched on scene and the passenger of the vehicle was eventually transported to IMC hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries."

The passenger killed in the accident was identified as Trent Hansen, 47.

Officers began a DUI investigation involving the driver when alcohol was detected on the scene.

The empty tow truck was parked in a construction area in a residential neighborhood, Osoro said. Hansen and Helm were friends, but police said Helm declined to tell investigators where the two were traveling from at the time of the accident.

"In this situation, with alcohol being involved and the extent of the passenger's injuries, we are fortunate that no one else was injured," Osoro said. "It's a good thing the other vehicle that was involved was unoccupied."
