LAYTON — Two men who police say apparently didn't think about what happens to bullets after they're fired into the air were arrested early Friday following a weeklong shooting spree.

Brandon Brown, 20, of Kaysville, and Christopher Church, 27, of Layton, were arrested and booked into the Davis County Jail for investigation of numerous charges, including two counts each of aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, possession of a firearm by an intoxicated person and discharging a firearm within city limits.

Investigators believe the duo is responsible for numerous reports of shots being fired in Layton and other parts of Davis County — mainly in residential areas — on Oct. 18 and Oct. 22-24.

In each case, detectives believe the duo shot a .45-caliber handgun into the air multiple times, said Layton Police Lt. Shawn Horton. But the two didn't give much thought about what happens when the rounds came back down.

As of Friday, there were no reports of injuries or property damage. But Horton said police wouldn't be surprised if they started getting reports as residents got out to do yard work and home repairs this weekend.

The shooting spree came to an end early Friday when two 17-year-olds said they met Brown and Church in an off-road area near Antelope Drive. After the teens left, Brown and Church began following them and fired a gun multiple times, Horton said. The teens thought the men were firing at them and called 911.

About 10:45 p.m., numerous residents called 911 reporting shots fired in the area of 1062 East and 2525 North. Officers later spotted the vehicle near 2350 North and 2275 East, and conducted a "high-risk" felony stop.

"Church was noncompliant with officers' commands during the high-risk stop and was taken to the ground before he was handcuffed," Horton said.

A 17-year-old girl was also found in the car. She was determined not to be involved in the shooting and was not arrested.

Both Church and Brown were intoxicated, Horton said. A .45-caliber handgun was found in the vehicle.
