LONDON, May 19, 2006 (UPI via COMTEX) -- A former physical education instructor from England has become the first woman to sail solo and nonstop around the world the "wrong way."

Dee Caffari, 33, spent 178 days at sea facing icebergs and hurricane-force winds with little sleep as she piloted her 72-foot cutter Aviva against the prevailing winds and currents.

The rough conditions off the Lizard Point finish site formed a fitting backdrop to a voyage of about 29,000 nautical miles, the Times of London said.
