SALT LAKE CITY — A moving and storage company will pay $450,000 in what federal regulators say is the largest settlement for a national origin discrimination case in Utah.
Colorado-based Mesa Systems Inc. agreed to the settlement after the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission filed a federal lawsuit against the company.
Hispanic workers at Mesa Systems' Salt Lake warehouse were subjected to discrimination and a hostile work environment, including racist name-calling and slurs, according to the lawsuit filed in 2011. The EEOC also claimed the company's English-only policy had a disparate impact on Hispanic, Asian and Pacific Islander employees.
In addition to the payment, the company agreed to undergo training, revise its policies and rescind the language restrictions.
