MAGNA — A two-alarm fire damaged a home at 2939 S. 9200 West on Thursday afternoon.

The family had evacuated when crews arrived around 3:45 p.m., according to Unified Fire Department Capt. Clint Mecham.

Crews found “heavy, black smoke coming from the roof, windows and doors and made an interior attack on the fire,” Mecham said.

Unified Fire, assisted by the West Jordan and West Valley City fire departments, got the fire out in about 30 minutes, he said. Crews had difficulty accessing the fire because of additions to the home, and flames spread to multiple attic spaces.

A firefighter found the family’s dog unresponsive in the basement. Paramedics revived the dog on the scene and took the animal to a local veterinarian for evaluation, Mecham said.

Fire officials will estimate the damage and investigate the cause after crews complete salvage and overhaul and checking for hot spots, according to Mecham.

The American Red Cross is assisting the displaced family.
