OREM — A fire started in the engine of a car parked near the Utah Valley University library quickly spread to eight other vehicles Tuesday evening.
Reports came in around 5:30 p.m. of a vehicle fire in the parking lot west of the Library, according to UVU spokesperson Chris Taylor. The Orem Fire Department responded and extinguished the fire quickly.
"It's an unfortunate situation, but luckily no one was hurt," Taylor said.
As of Tuesday night, fire officials were still trying to locate a few of the cars' owners involved in the fire. Orem Fire Capt. Chad Van Orman said six cars were completely torched, while at least two others sustained body and heat damage from the flames.
"There were a lot of spectators," he said. "All the students were there. I think everyone came out of class and watched."
No cause has been determined, but officials thought the fire was started in the engine, according to officials.
A few bystanders took photos of the fire as it happened.
