CACHE COUNTY — Cache County police found the body of a 2-year-old boy inside a home after his mother went to the hospital with an unknown medical condition.

When the 42-year-old woman checked herself into Logan Regional Hospital, police were asked by hospital staff to make a welfare check on the woman's young son. When police arrived at the River Heights home, the toddler was discovered dead from unknown causes.

There were no obvious signs of trauma.

The body has been sent to the medical examiner's office. Police are not releasing the name of the mother or child pending the investigation and family notification.

The mother was transferred by ambulance to a Salt Lake City area hospital. Police are not currently calling the case a criminal investigation.

Chad Jensen with the Cache County Police Department said the investigation is still in the early stages and law enforcement will need to determine a cause of death before they can proceed with the case.

Investigators remained on the scene Thursday morning looking for evidence.

"The mother and child lived alone in the apartment," Jensen said. "We don't know much else about the situation. It's a sad case, to be sure."

Neighbors of the woman said they're in shock.

"The little boy I would see every day being pushed down the street, something happened to him," one neighbor said.

More details will be posted as they become available.
