SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- The Utah Department of Transportation says that despite unexpected costs, it will be able to cover its winter bill.
The department says it has enough leftover money from gas taxes and car registrations to cover an $8 million shortfall in its snow-plowing budget. The bill has been unusually high this winter due to frequent storms, which can cost the state as much as $800,000 each.
Officials had feared they would have to divert funds from construction projects to cover unexpected costs. Instead, legislators authorized UDOT to use most of a $10 million windfall from a fund that collects about $450 million in fees each year.
