CEDAR CITY — Police have arrested a man they say rode his motorcycle down Main Street on Thursday evening and shot another motorcyclist as he passed by.

An officer observed James Alan Reynolds, 55, speeding and driving recklessly, and about 15 minutes later attempted to pull him over as he headed south near 1045 N. Main for improperly passing other vehicles.

Reynolds flipped around and headed in the opposite direction, beginning a brief chase about 5:40 p.m., Cedar City Police officer Jimmy Roden said.

As Reynolds headed north on Main Street, the officer saw he was carrying a gun. As the officer continued the pursuit with his lights and siren sounding, Reynolds fired at a 21-year-old man who was also headed north on a motorcycle, striking him multiple times, Roden said.

Police did not release what kind of firearm Reynolds was carrying.

The shooting victim went off the road and crashed as the officer continued to pursue Reynolds, who collided with westbound traffic at the intersection of Main and Center streets.

Reynolds and the two occupants of the vehicle sustained minor injuries, Roden said. Reynolds was taken to Valley View Medical Center and was scheduled to be booked into Iron County Jail upon release from the hospital.

The name of the shooting victim was not released Thursday. He was in serious condition and being treated at Dixie Regional Medical Center, Roden said.
