This is Fred Ball for Zions Bank, speaking on business.
Brrrrr . . . This time of year is not my favorite. I don't "winter" very well. So, when I had an appointment to talk to Mark Lowe at Lava Hot Springs in Idaho, I thought my timing was all off. I would much rather visit the popular resort in the summer time when I could really enjoy the facilities.
Well, I was very wrong. I discovered that this world-famous hot springs resort is enjoyed year round! True, the Olympic swimming pool is only open from mid-May through Labor Day, but the Hot Mineral Springs is open 363 days a year. Also, there is a 25-yard indoor aquatic center that is open year round, where you can take part in aerobics classes, lap swimming and open swimming. The facility boasts two diving boards, six swimming lanes, basketball hoops and now a pool-side climbing wall.
But what I really enjoyed were the soothing hot pools. The water bubbles out of natural underground springs and has no sulfur and, therefore, no bad odor. Over two and a half million gallons a day course through the springs and are diverted into the Portneuf River, keeping the springs ever changing and clean. Temperatures range from 102 to 112 degrees and it is wonderful to sit, relax and soothe your tired muscles.
Mark explained to me that the U.S. government granted the land to the State of Idaho for public use. Lava Hot Springs is a state-owned property, but it operates from revenue generated through ticket sales. Last year more than 150,000 people enjoyed the wonderful hot mineral water.
I saw where you could enjoy the services of a licensed massage therapist as well as facilities for picnics, volleyball and family gatherings. In the summer, the swimming complex features two water slides, six diving boards and three diving platforms.
I just have to re-visit Lava Hot Springs when I have more time and some family members with me to enjoy this world famous destination resort.
