SALT LAKE CITY — Another TV streaming service is going to enter the Utah market come August as Aereo carries out its plan to head west and launch across the state.

The service is already available in New York, Boston and Atlanta, and will be launching in Chicago in September. The official launch date for Utah is Aug. 19 and preregistration is already taking place.

Aereo streams local broadcasts for $8 a month, comparable to Hulu and Netflix costs. The system works based off a tiny antenna in a local data center, where a remote DVR is stored as well. Both are controlled remotely from any Internet-connected device.

Their website explains the process as a chain of events; the customer first tunes to a channel through an Aereo application, which then signifies to the antenna to tune into the channel, at which point the DVR will begin recording.

"Utahns are connected, tech savvy and interested in innovations that can add value to their lives," Chet Kanojia, the company's CEO, said in news release. "When it comes to how you watch television, Aereo's technology will bring more choice and flexibility to Utahns across the state."

Several broadcasters are up in arms over the rising company. In April, Fox threatened to leave network TV altogether over a lawsuit with Aereo. The TV-streaming startup won against major broadcasters, including ABC, NBC and CBS, when a federal judge ruled in favor of Aereo in a lawsuit.

Utahns interested in the service can preregister for priority access, and on Aug. 19 Aereo will be available in all 29 counties. The news release said Utah customers will be able to watch and record major networks like KSTU-HD, KSL-DT and KUTV-HD, as well as special interest like BYU-TV and ION and some foreign language channels.
