I woke up early this morning, not an unusual thing in and of itself, but this one felt different. It was Saturday. Normally I would have tried to coax myself back to sleep, but today I sat awake in the pre-dawn light and thought about President Hinckley.
I thought of his face, his kind face, and the way he welcomed you with a smile before he spoke a word. I thought of the words, the many words I've heard him speak over the years. I remembered his admonition to serve each other, to keep faith with each other, to have faith in ourselves and in God. Hearing him say from the podium at a KSL meeting years ago that he was proud of us, proud of the work we did and most especially how we served the community, was one of the greatest moments in my life. I warm now just remembering it.
I miss my sons this morning, at home still sleeping in their beds, Ethan struggling with a cold, but I am glad to be here. I am glad to keep faith with you today. I believe the writer who called President Gordon B. Hinckley the people's prophet captured it. He was our very own - all of ours - whether we are members of the church or not. He loved and cared for all of us, all over the world, a feat I cannot understand but am humbled by.
Let us keep faith with each other - this day of remembrance and always.
