CHICAGO, May 10, 2006 (UPI via COMTEX) -- An improving U.S. job market appears to be enticing more stay-at-home mothers into the salaried workforce, a private consultancy said Wednesday.
Challenger, Gray & Christmas Inc. analyzed Bureau of Labor Statistics data and found that 58 percent of all 1,896,000 re-entrants age 20 or older in 2005 were women.
A Challenger spokesman said the increased availability of portable technology is helping workers manage their commitments to work and family.
"Laptops, cell phones, PDAs and wireless Internet are making it possible to stay in touch with the office from anywhere, at any time," he said. "The concept of the office and regular office hours have blurred. People can work from the bleachers at a child's soccer game or late at night after the kids have gone to bed."
