SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Jazz held NBA Draft workouts and I got to do one thing that I have always wanted to do, conduct an interview with an athlete in German.
We in the media get some great opportunities to interview some great personalities. In speaking with my colleague Jeremiah Jensen, some of his favorite interviews of his career are John Elway, Haloti Ngata, and the San Diego Chicken. I know Rod Zundel loved speaking with Leslie Nielsen during the 2002 Winter Olympic Games here in Salt Lake City.
The Utah Jazz brought in six players to work out and one of them is Dennis Schroeder. He is a 6'1 point guard out of Braunschweig, Germany.
I just want to thank him for letting me conduct an interview in German with him. Well, since he finished half of my sentences for me, I thank him for letting me interview him in some sort of bad German. It has been a while since I spoke it full time, but it was fun. Wie gings heute? How did it go today?
Ich denke es war ein gutes Workout fur mich gegen Peyton Siva, ein sehr guter spieler, Ich versucht alles zu geben und Wir haben auf jeden Fall sehr gut gekaempft. I think it was a good workout against Peyton Siva, he is a very good player. I tried to give everything I had and we fought very hard.
Weisst Du dass Er ein Welt Meisterschaft in College gewonnen hat? Did you know that he won a national championship in college?
Da habe Ich erst gehort wo Ich in Chicago war und dann hat mir mein agent dann erzaehlt, und habe Ich gedacht dass Er sehr guter spieler ist und Ich versuchte ihn zu gewinnen und versuchte alles zu geben gegen ihn. I heard that first in Chicago and then my agent also told me. I think he is a very good player and I tried to beat him and gave everything I had against him.
Ob Ich gewonnen habe? (He asked the question for me, thanks Dennis!) Ich denke dass wir beide sehr gut gekaempft und beide ausgeglichen gelaufen, mal hat Er gutes gemacht, mal Ich und des wegen. I think we fought very hard against each other and both balanced each other out. One time he did something good, the next time, I did.
Wie du spielst is im vergleich zum Rajon Rondo, was sagst Du dazu? How you play is often compared to Rajon Rondo, what do you say to that?
Sagen mir auf jeden fall sehr viele, Er ist auch mein lieblings spieler und versuch halt alles zu geben dass Ich halt also, erfolgreich werde wie Er, und versuch halt viele spiele von ihm zu sehen dass Ich halt weiter mich entwickeln kann. That is what a lot of people say, he is also my favorite player and and I try to give everything that I have so that I can be successful like him. I try to watch many of his games to see how I can further develop my game.
Die Jazz brauchen ein Point Guard, sie haben keine auf der Roster, was sagst Du dazu? The Jazz need a point guard, they have none on their roster, what do you say to that?
Ich Denke es ist eine sehr gute Situation, wenn du herein kommst dann bist du der erste der auch mitspielt dass du auf jeden fall auch Zeit bekommst dann denke Ich dass ist wichtig im ersten Jahr, ein bisschen Zeit zu bekommen zu gucken wie die Liga ist, und Ich denke Ja wenn Ich get drafted werde es ware schon eine gute sache. I think is is a very good situation. When you come in and are the first one to play and get a little time, that is very important in the first year. To come in a get a little bit of time to see how the league is. I think it would be a very good thing to get drafted here.
Was denkst du von Utah? What do you think of Utah?
Ich denke die Luft ist ein bisschen, es ist sehr hoch hier, aber Ich denke wenn du immer trainierst, dann wirst du auf jeden fall irgendwann bereit, Auf jeden fall eine sehr gute Stadt. I think the air is a little...(thin), it is very high (altitude) here, but I think if you train for it, then you will be ready for it. It is a very good city.
Morgen nach Deutschland wieder? Tomorrow, back to Germany?
Morgan, nach dem sechs, oder sieben workouts, fliege Ich zuruck. Tomorrow, after the six or seven workouts, yes I fly back (to Germany).
Wie war es hier im Vereinigten Staaten, hast du viel spass gehabt? How was it here in the United States, did you have fun?
Ja, Ich war schon ein monat hier, also, auf jeden Fall, ein sehr coolest land, Jeder stadt wo Ich war hatte mir sehr gefallen. Yes, I have been here a month, it is a very cool country. I really like every city that I was in.
Was war am lieblingsten (die Stadt)? What was your favorite city?
Ich denke, Ich habe nicht so viel von allem gesehen, Ich habe sehr viel von Boston gesehen und fand Ich schon nich schlecht und Philadelphia auch, Ich meine hier, die Berge sind auf jeden Fall schoen und kann man viel mit deiner familie machen. I think, I haven't seen a lot from all the cities, but I did see a lot from Boston and I liked that, also Philadelphia too. Here (Salt Lake City) the mountains are beautiful and you could do a lot here with your family.
