This is Chris Redgrave for Zions Bank Speaking on Business.

It's likely you've heard of the TLC show "Storage Wars," where auctions are held on abandoned storage units. Jeff and Sue Proctor, owners of Sugarhouse and South Jordan Self Storage in Sugarhouse and South Jordan, will tell you these auctions do actually happen. It used to be only five or six people who showed up, but now there's closer to 100 because of the popularity of "Storage Wars."

Operating a successful storage company is much more than taking care of abandoned storage units. Jeff and Sue bring a personal passion for excellence to managing their storage facilities in both South Jordan and Sugarhouse. It starts with Jeff , a realtor for many years... He understands from a buyer's position what a great storage facility means and what it needs...

So, he and Sue made sure they're first class all the way...They start with the important ideas — keypad punch in, alarms on all units, gates on the storage area — and a way to track who goes in and out so if something suspicious happens, they have records of who was there.

But it goes further than that.... Both their storage properties also have on-site managers who are available in case of a problem — but they also act as another layer of security....This has come in very handy over the years. For instance, there was the time a rock band which decided they could use one of the units for practice. ... That didn't work out too well ... Experiences like this show the wisdom of having managers on site.

Most important, is caring for what you store with them. So South Jordan has some temperature controlled units, and they do pest control as well.... But storage units aren't air tight, so it's important for people to wrap their valuables in plastic to keep them clean. It's also wise to insure your belongings just to be sure they're covered ....
