Identical twins Nachelle and Natalie Stewart have been racing each other since they could crawl...
Now 16...
The 2 are still going at it.
" IT'S NOT A SIBLING RIVALRY, WE'RE ACTUALLY EACH OTHER'S FAN. IT'S MORE SISTERLY LOVE, SERIOUSLY."
"IT'S SO FUN TO RUN AGAINST HER BECAUSE IT'S NOT A RIVALRY WE NEED TO PUSH EACH OTHER AS HARD AS WE CAN BECAUSE AND WE KNOW IF WE STAY TOGETHER WE'LL DO REALLY WELL.."
The 2 Spanish Fork freshmen seem to always do really well. At last weekend's Davis Invitational, Nachelle set a new state record in the 400 meters,
While Natalie anchored the winning 400 meter relay.
"THAT WAS COOL AFTER I CAUGHT MY BREATH AFTER 30 MINUTES IT WAS FUN AN AWESOME EXPERIENCE."
"I DIDN'T KNOW SHE HAD GOTTEN IT UNTIL ABOUT 2 HOURS LATER AND I WAS LIKE WAIT, YOU GOT IT? AND IT WAS FUN."
The twins first began racing in the 3rd grade...and they haven't slowed down. Pushing...encouraging...and cheering each other on...
even at the starting line.
"WE'RE ALL GOOD LUCK...WE'RE MOSTLY THINKING AND STRETCHING OUT A LITTLE, STRESSING AND GETTING NERVOUS."
"WE GO IN THINKING I CAN WIN THIS BUT IF WE'RE BOTH THINKING THAT ONE OF US WON'T YOU KNOW BUT WE TRY OUT BEST."
And usually one of them wins.
The 2 are so close in their times...it's become a constant battle...sister...vs...sister.
" I'VE PROBABLY LOST TO NACHELL BY .01 LIKE 5 TIMES IT'S BEEN SO CLOSE SO MANY TIMES."
" IT'S A TOSS UP, RIGHT NOW NATALIE IS WINNING THE SHORTER SPRINTS, NACHELLE THE LONGER SPRINTS, THE 400. AND IN A MEET HERE THEY WERE NECK AND NECK THEY TIED FOR FIRST IN THE 200. "
"EVERY YEAR THEY SURPRISE YOU A LITTLE MORE AND CAN'T BELIEVE WHAT THEY CAN DO WHAT THEY'VE DONE."
What they've done is quite remarkable. Add in their sister Diane, a senior, and the 3 won 7 state titles last year. Diana is injured this season but will race for BYU this fall. The twins may not be far behind. . "THEIR TIMES RIGHT NOW, I'VE LOOKED AT BYU'S TIMES AND THEY WOULD BEAT BYU'S TOP SPRINTERS RIGHT NOW."
But for now...
Nachelle and Natalie
will continue to push each other...no matter the outcome.
"THEY'LL FIGHT TO WIN BUT WHEN THEY GO HOME, THEY'RE STILL FRIENDS."
THE STATE TRACK REGIONALS ARE NEXT WEEK...FOLLOWED BY STATE THE FOLLOWING WEEK.
