SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- The state parole board will keep a secretary who took more than a million dollars from a school district foundation in prison until 2018.
Denise Aughney pleaded guilty last year to theft, money laundering and forgery for taking funds from the Weber School District Foundation, which bought books for underprivileged students. Aughney, 46, was a part-time secretary.
The theft was discovered during a 2006 audit.
Aughney says she panicked and took the funds after her stepdaughter was diagnosed with colon cancers and medical bills piled up. She spent the money on travel and household furnishings.
The decision by the Utah Board of Pardons and Parole was announced Monday.
