SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- After 33 years in diplomatic service, Utah's Mexican consul has retired.

Salvador Jimenez's last day on the job was Dec. 31, 2007. He served in the Utah consulate, which oversees Idaho, Montana and parts of Wyoming, for three years. He is being temporarily replaced by his deputy of two years, Eusebio Romero.

Jimenez says he's looking forward to life outside the Mexican Foreign Service. He says he'd like to teach at a university and plans to research and write about immigration issues.

Jimenez is also working on his own U.S. documentation status so that he and his wife, an elementary school teacher, can remain living in Utah.
